USB flash devices such as pen drives are an essential and most common way to carry along the data on the go. This could include your private and confidential files that you might want to secure to prevent them from unauthorized access, in case you lose the pen drive or someone at your workplace analyzes it while you’re away. Fortunately, such activity can be simply prevented by locking the flash drive using USB Safeguard.

USB Safeguard is a free, smart and effective tool to encrypt and protect data with a
password on your removable pen drive using the AES 256 bits encryption. It is a portable program offering novice and expert users the ability to easily password protect the pen drive, thus to protect the valuable data stored on flash drive and prevent data theft. It sets a password for the entire pendrive and not just for a certain file or folder. Once the drive is locked, one cannot read nor write any data to it without the correct password. Supports FAT16, FAT32 & NTFS file system, requires no installation.

How to Password Protect a Pen Drive – Download USB Safeguard, then copy the file "usbsafeguard.exe" to the root of your pen drive and run it. Agree to the software license agreement, Set your password and press Lock button to lock the pen drive. To unlock, launch the program from pen drive. Input the password and hit Unlock to access the entire data stored on the drive. You can click on help icon (?) to set your contact details (email or phone) in case you loose the pen drive.

Note: The free version works only with USB Flash drive of size max 2 GB. This seems fine as the tool is really very nifty and useful.

In the past, we’ve shared several free utilities for Windows and Mac to wipe or delete data securely which includes all your confidential and private stuff. Big Angry Dog has released a new freeware ‘Hardwipe’ that allows users to permanently delete any desired contents from their hard drive to prevent the disposed data from being recovered ever.

Hardwipe is a 100% free program for Windows that offers various advanced features and options than just letting you securely wipe the data from your computer. It boasts a modern and easy-to-use interface, specially designed for Windows 7. With Hardwipe, one can wipe individual or multiple files, folders, an entire drive or partition. Additionally, it offers the ability to quickly Clean Free Drive Space to prevent anyone from recovering the old wiped data. It does so by overwriting the contents of previously deleted files. During Clean Space operation, the data presently stored on drive will not be wiped.

Hardwipe intelligently controls the disk writing speed for lengthy operations. When the ‘Speed Control’ is set to Automatic, it restricts disk writing considering the computer is being actively used, but increases it to maximum on being idle. You can always select "Full Speed" or "Restricted" from the main window to manually control the speed.

It integrates with Windows explorer that comes handy as you can quickly wipe files from right-click content menu. One can wipe a single file, multiple files or a folder simply by right-clicking. This is also possible for hard disk drives that can be wiped or cleaned.

Shell integration is disabled by default. To enable it, just open Hardwipe and go to Preferences > Options. Then select ‘Show Hardwipe Menus’ option and hit OK.

Key Features:

Erases files by overwriting their contents prior to deletion.

Integrates with Windows Explorer

Supports major overwriting schemes, including: GOST P50739-95, DOD 5220.22-M, Schneier & Gutmann.

Can even purge the Swapfile used by Windows (not available yet)

Intelligent use of disk cache so that your computer remains responsive when cleaning entire drives

Hardwipe can shutdown your computer automatically when finished

OS X Lion (v10.7) has been finally released, the upgrade is now available for download at Mac App Store for $29.99. The Lion upgrade has a pretty hefty size of 3.49 GB which can be downloaded only through Mac App Store. Although, you have the option to download the latest upgrade from a Apple retail store but this makes it cumbersome if you want to install Lion on your other Macs or systems with no broadband access, thus to prevent downloading the same upgrade for other Macs individually.

There is an easy way to overcome this problem – just Create a Bootable DVD or a USB Flash drive to Install Mac OS X Lion on multiple Macs without any hassle. OS X Daily has recently shared a perfect step-by-step guide which allows you to simply perform this task, just follow the steps carefully as suggested in their post. Check the links below:

Note: After upgrading, Lion deletes the installer file automatically from the Applications. So, perform this task before running the Lion upgrade or make a copy of the installer to some other place on your Mac.

Recently, I got a Samsung netbook which came just with DOS. So, I’m here to share the working method as ‘How to Install Windows 7 on netbook via bootable USB pen drive’. The below procedure has been tried on Samsung N148 Plus Netbook (NP-N148-DP03IN). This guide may also work for other Samsung netbooks and netbooks from other brands.

To Install Windows 7 on Netbook, you first need to create a Bootable USB flash drive with Windows 7 because there is no DVD drive in netbooks. Follow our guide to make a bootable Windows 7 flash drive, easily using ‘Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool’.

After successfully creating a bootable media, follow the below steps carefully:

1. Plug-in the flash drive to netbook and make sure the netbook is charged.

2. Power On the netbook and Press the F2 key as you see ‘Samsung logo’ on screen.

3. You’ll now be entered into BIOS of netbook. Open the ‘Boot’ options and then open ‘Boot Device Priority’ using Enter.

4. Using the F5/F6 keys, move the “USB HDD” device to 1st position as shown below. Use F10 to save the Bios settings.

This is all done to let the netbook boot from USB flash drive.

On restarting, netbook will boot via USB drive and Windows 7 Installation screen will appear. Install the Windows 7 edition (Starter, Home Basic or Home Premium edition are recommended).

Note this point – There are mere 5 steps which are processed automatically when installing Windows 7. In netbook, you have to change the 1st boot device back to netbook’s HDD after it restarts on completion of 4th step i.e. Installing updates

What to do when Netbook restarts after completion of 4th step (Installing updates) -

Using the above steps, move back the ‘AHCI HDD’ to 1st position under the boot device priority in BIOS. On restarting, the ‘Install Windows’ box will appear and 5th step i.e. Completing installation will continue to run. Be patient and let the process to complete!

On completing the final step, Windows will ask to enter a username and PC name. That’s it, you’ve successfully installed Windows 7 on your netbook.

Install the Drivers, software and Updates in Netbook – After Windows is installed, it’s time to install the drivers and software. Samsung provides a DVD with “System Software Media” that lets you install the device drivers and software, all unattended.

You can copy the full content of Samsung DVD to a USB drive using a PC. Then, open the SoftwareMedia.exe file to install the device software on netbook without DVD.

Hope you found this guide useful. Do post your comments. Related Posts:

Nowadays, USB Flash devices (Pen drives, memory cards) play a prime role in spreading virus, malware, trojan, worms, spyware over various computers. When a removable device is infected with malware, its ‘autorun.inf’ file is normally modified to execute the malware when it is connected or whenever the user double-clicks the infected drive.

No Autorun is a small portable tool, which can Disable Autorun and Blocks virus in USB flash/disk from auto-running. When a USB disk is inserted, this tool not only locks the autorun.inf file, but also locks all the autorun-related virus and other suspicious files.

How to use -

After you run "No Autorun", the program waits for USB disk/flash insertion. Once you insert a USB disk, the program locks suspicious files in it, for example, autorun.inf file and other related executable files.

If you want to delete these files, just open the main window and click "Delete Autorun Files" or "Delete All". DO NOT try to delete them from explorer or elsewhere because they are LOCKED by "No Autorun". If you want to open one of these files, just open the main window, click the file and click "Unlock".

If you can’t determine that whether the suspicious files are virus or not, just leave them there. "No Autorun" locked them so that they can’t be executed and harm you computer.

It also has "USB disk soft write protect" function, which when enabled makes the connected USB disk as read-only. On enabling it, you’ll not be able to transfer any data to flash drive or delete its contents. It’s useful when your PC is already infected but you don’t want to spread the virus to your USB flash drives.
