Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) is the most recent version of web browser from Microsoft. Some of the top features included in IE9 are: Hardware accelerated graphics and text, clean user interface, Pinned sites, jump lists, new tab page, one box, HTML 5 support, the new JavaScript engine which makes it a lot faster and several other smart features.

Just like IE8, Internet Explorer 9 has built-in developer tools which help developers to quickly determine and resolve HTML, CSS, and JavaScript related problems by making changes to code from within the browser which can be previewed live. These dev tools are generally not used by the basic users but comes handy to a webmaster or web designer. To access them, just click on the gear icon and select “F12 developer tools” or simply hit F12.

Then just navigate to the ‘Tools’ tab and choose from the listed tools. One amazing and useful tool is Resize, using which one can easily check how their webpage appears in different screen resolutions. You can define a custom resolution too.

There is a Ruler to accurately measure any arbitrary objects on the screen in pixels. There are multiple colors rulers and a magnifying glass is also available for precision. A defined ruler can be moved, resized, and re-angled. Once drawn, the ruler shows the (x,y) coordinates of each end relative to position of the points and the ruler length is shown at the center of the ruler in pixels.

A basic Color Picker tool is also there that lets you pick the color sample from any object on a webpage and indicates its RGB and HEX values. To use it, just position the cursor over an object and left-click to select its color. Then click Copy and close, the HTML value of color will be copied to clipboard. For professional task, we suggest using Instant Eyedropper which has a magnifier that shows multiple shades in a solid color.

Microsoft has just released the June 2011 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer, that also includes the first security update (KB2530548) for Internet Explorer 9 thereby updating IE9 to IE 9.0.1. As per Security Bulletin MS11-050, the update addresses the vulnerabilities by modifying the way Internet Explorer enforces the content settings supplied by the Web server, handles HTML sanitization using toStaticHTML, handles objects in memory, and handles script during certain processes.

This security update resolves 11 privately reported vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer. The most severe vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted Web page using Internet Explorer. An attacker who successfully exploited any of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

This security update is rated Critical for Internet Explorer 6 on Windows clients, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8, and Internet Explorer 9; and Moderate for Internet Explorer 6 on Windows servers.

The update is now available via Windows Update, so those who have enabled automatic updates do not need to take any action. You can also get the KB2530548 Update manually from Windows Update or download the applicable update using link below, install it to protect your computer and get all the fixes till date.

Since Internet Explorer is the default browser on all Windows, it is used by majority of users. If you are experiencing issues with IE8 on Windows 7 like: unable to access sites, web browsing is very slow or it crashes frequently, then you must troubleshoot IE.

You can easily fix Internet Explorer problems, with the built-in troubleshooter that can automatically find and fix some common problems with IE. To Troubleshoot Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7, follow the below steps:

1. Go to Start menu, Control Panel and select ‘Troubleshooting’ (select ‘view by’ as large icons first in control panel).

2. In Troubleshooting window, click View all from the left side pane.

3. Click “Internet Explorer Performance” from All Categories window.

4. Internet Explorer Performance troubleshooter will open. Click the Next button and it will automatically start checking IE for defects and hopefully fix them.

5. Upon completing, close the troubleshooter or view the troubleshooting report.

Now open IE and it should run fine. If Internet Explorer is still having problems, try to Disable all add-ons or Reset Internet Explorer settings.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 has a safety feature called InPrivate Filtering which is different from InPrivate Browsing. InPrivate Filtering helps prevent website content providers from collecting information about sites you visit. These content providers or third-party websites such as – advertisements, maps, or web analysis tools are present as content on many webpages.

InPrivate Filtering option can be easily enabled in IE 8 from Safety > InPrivate Filtering or using Ctrl+Shift+F shortcut. The problem is that InPrivate Filtering feature is disabled automatically as you close IE and needs to be enabled again at every new session.

InPrivate Filter Manager is a small and portable tool, which enables InPrivate Filtering mode to automatically turn on when a user opens Internet Explorer. The program does this by adding some keys to registry which can also be done manually. It also provides the ability to easily add filters to InPrivate Filtering – Small filter (740 items) and Large filter (3966 items) to autoblock items.

To Enable InPrivate Filtering by default in IE8, Download InPrivate Filter Manager and extract it. Run the InPrivate Filter Manager.exe file and tick mark the first 3 checkbox. Click Apply to save the changes.

Now InPrivate Filtering will be permanently activated in IE and can be disabled anytime.

AdBlock add-on or extension is available for Firefox and Chrome to Disable/Remove advertisements in them. There was no such easy way to remove ads in Internet explorer which is the default browser on all Windows. Don’t worry, I’ve found an effective alternative which can easily block or remove all ads in IE.

Simple Adblock is a new and simple extension for Internet Explorer that blocks all kinds of advertising from websites including flash ads, banner ads, rich media, fly-ins, slide-ins and pop-ups. By eliminating the ads you also improve your surfing speed.

To use Simple adblock, just install it using .exe file. It’ll then ask you to chose your country to configure the ad filtering and use filters available for your geographic region. You can also add privacy filters to block the tracking scripts and protect your privacy.

Simple adblock can be easily accessed from IE status bar. You can right-click its icon to disable it temporarily or disable adblocking on a particular site. It works pretty well and doesn’t shows any white space when ads are blocked on web pages.

Internet Explorer 8 shows tab preview in taskbar for all the tabs opened in it on Windows 7. This feature can be annoying for most users like me. Certainly, IE8 holds a 1-click easy option to turn off this feature.

To disable IE tab previews in taskbar, just open Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options. Open settings for ‘Tabs’ and uncheck the box saying ‘Show previews for individual tabs in the taskbar’. Click Ok and restart IE for letting changes to take effect.

Now you will see only a single preview of the active tab running in IE.
