Metro Style UI is one of the most talked features about Windows 8, that brings a whole new modern interface to the next major version of Windows. Metro style seen previously in Windows Phone 7, is specifically designed for touch devices like tablets and touch PCs. Metro is integrated and enabled by default when you install Windows 8 Developer Preview on a desktop and control it using a combo of mouse and keyboard.

However, it seems most basic desktop users are finding the Metro UI cool just for a short while. That’s because Windows 8 doesn’t includes the old classic start menu and the real power of Metro interface cant be experienced on traditional systems. Fortunately, there is an easy way to completely disable the Metro UI in Windows 8 and re-enable the classic start button/menu as seen in Windows 7, Vista and XP.

To Enable the old start menu in Windows 8 Dev build, open regedit. To open registry editor in Windows 8, go to Start > Search, select Apps from right sidebar, type regedit in search bar and select ‘regedit’ from the listed Apps.

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer and change the value of RPEnabled from "1" to "0" (without quotes). Close registry editor, you will get the old start menu. You may need to Log off to see the changes.

However, there is one limitation. On enabling the classic start menu, you will no more be able to see or use the Metro UI. Just change the value back to “1” to get it again.

Update: Disabling Metro UI using above method also disables Ribbon UI in explorer.

Today, when I was installing Steam client by Valve to download the free Alien Swarm game, Steam showed an error saying “Steam is temporarily unavailable, please try later” while updating steam automatically after install. This error prevented steam from installing successfully. This problem is generally caused because steam connects to its server nearest to your location, which might be temporarily not working.

Fortunately, Raymond has posted an interesting and helpful tutorial a day ago which describes how to get rid of this issue. All we need to do is manually change the server location, which steam uses to update itself. Follow the steps below carefully:

1. Download ClientRegistry Toolkit

2. Extract and run SteamRegEdit.exe

3. Go to File > Open and browse to C:\Program Files\Steam\ and open the file named ‘ClientRegistry.blob’.

4. Double-click the entry CellId, shown in the right pane and change its numeric value to anywhere between 1-90. This will change the region to which steam connects. Some valve servers are listed below:

1 – 209.197.20.99 (US)
2 – 69.28.153.106 (US)
3 – 69.28.153.106 (US)
4 – 87.248.209.138 (UK)
5 – 95.140.224.26 (UK)
6 – 213.8.254.150 (Israel)
7 – 194.124.229.17 (Germany)

9 – 203.66.135.28 (Taiwan)
10 – 69.28.151.27 (US)

5. After modifying the value, select Yes to confirm and change the value.

Now run Steam and it will update and install without any issues.

We’ve already discussed, How to completely remove Firefox and Chrome browser from Windows PC. Like these browsers, Opera also leaves its leftovers after uninstallation. So, it is necessary to remove all the old files and folders if you want to do a fresh installation of opera.

Follow the steps below to completely remove Opera:

1. Backup your Bookmarks first before proceeding for uninstall.

2. Remove Opera from Add/Remove Programs (Windows XP) or Programs & Features(Windows 7 or Vista).

3. Delete the folder named ‘Opera’ from C:\Program Files\ (default path).

4. Delete the ‘Opera folder’ from below listed directories:

In Windows XP –

• C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Opera
• C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera

In Windows 7 and Vista -

• C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Opera
• C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Opera

5. Download CCleaner, Install and Run it. Click ‘Analyse’ and run cleaner to remove any temporary and junk files. Click ‘Scan for issues’ under Registry to fix those issues.

Opera should now be uninstalled completely.
