We’ve previously discussed various Free Recue Tools like: Kaspersky Rescue Disk, Avira AntiVir Rescue System, AVG Rescue CD, and Norton Bootable Recovery Tool which all provides an effective way to clean PCs that cannot start up due to severe infection caused by a virus or malware. A similar free tool has now been released by Microsoft.

Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Beta, is a recovery tool that allows you to create a bootable media and can help you start an infected PC and perform an offline scan to help identify and remove rootkits and other advanced malware. In addition, it comes handy when users cannot install or start an antivirus solution on their PC, or if the installed solution can’t detect or remove malware on their PC.

It provides 3 option to make a bootable rescue media; using a blank CD or DVD, a USB drive, or you can create an ISO file and burn it later as per your requirement. The rescue software supports both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

Note: Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper is not a replacement for a full antivirus solution providing ongoing protection; it is meant to be used in situations where you cannot start your PC due to a virus or other malware infection.

Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 is a useful tool designed to scan and clean a severely infected computer without booting into Windows. It comes really handy when anti-virus applications or malware removal utilities fails to disinfect the x86 and x64 computers.

To use it, you need to download the ISO file, burn the ISO image to a CD, insert it into the infected system’s CD-ROM drive, enter the PCs BIOS, set it to boot from CD and reboot the computer. On loading, update the rescue disk databases, select the hard drives/partitions that you want to scan and click ‘Start scan’.

You can also Run Kaspersky Rescue Disk from a USB Flash Drive, by using Rescue2usb to create a bootable Kaspersky USB Rescue Disk.

Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 allows performing the following actions:

Configure objects scan settings:

• change security level
• change actions to be performed on detected objects
• create a scan scope
• change types of objects to be scanned
• limit scan time
• configure scan of compound files
• change a scan method
• set default settings

Configure additional settings

Create a report on scan and update tasks

Like Kaspersky, AVG & Avira AntiVir, Norton has now decided to offer Rescue tools which allows users to fix and clean the most severely infected Windows PCs.

Norton Bootable Recovery Tool – allows Norton users to boot a PC into a safe state when a system is so deeply infected that it won’t work properly or even boot up. The Norton Bootable Recovery Tool wizard automatically creates a bootable CD/DVD device or USB bootable device in a quick and easy way. It provides option to update the latest definitions on USB key. You can also create an ISO file and save it on PC.

Using NBRT, you can create a customized Rescue Boot Disc which boots in Safe mode, starts cleaning up your infected system, and gets back your PC to health quickly.

To create a rescue CD/USB, just Download ‘NBRT-Retail-Downloader’ file and run it. It will then download a file ‘NBRTWizard.exe’ (166 MB in size) which you need to install on Windows. Using, Norton Bootable Recovery Tool wizard, create a desired bootable device, boot your PC from it, and then scan to remove malicious threats easily.

NBRT requires a beta key which you can easily get by registering for the NAV 2011 or NIS 2011 beta. Register here

HDClone is a Free software that copies complete contents of hard disks and other IDE/ATA/SATA, SCSI, and USB media on a physical level. It allows to create backups for migrating an existing OS installation to a new hard disk.

Previously, I told you about the Kaspersky Rescue Disk which offers a safe way to remove viruses from a computer without the risk of getting infected. But here is another free rescue disk from Avira.

The Avira AntiVir Rescue System a linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore. Thus it is possible to repair a damaged system, to rescue data or to scan the system for virus infections. Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD. You can then use this CD/DVD to boot your computer.

The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is updated several times a day so that the most recent security updates are always available. You can also update databases online or using the VDF files.

Previously, I told you about Kaspersky Rescue Disk which offers a safe way to remove viruses from a computer without booting into Windows. But there is a problem that Kaspersky doesn’t offer any way to download Rescue disk updated with latest antivirus definitions.

So, I will tell you “How you can create a Kaspersky Rescue disk” updated with latest antivirus definitions using PE builder and Kaspersky easily.

Requirements: It is necessary to have Bart PE builder and Windows XP SP2 installation CD.

Follow the instructions below to create your Kaspersky Rescue disk:

1. Download PE Builder and install it.
2. Open Kaspersky Antivirus 2009 and click Rescue Disk.
3. Now select “create disk” and go to next step.
4. Browse to C:/ where PE builder is installed and also select location of your Windows CD.
5. Wait till PE builder completes the full operation.
6. Then choose create new ISO file and give it a name.
7. Your Bootable rescue disk has been created now which you can burn now or later.
8. Finished!
9. Now boot your PC with the created CD and scan it for viruses.

This will help you save your time and bandwidth as you don’t need to download the large size rescue disk image. I advice you to update your antivirus databases before performing this task so that your rescue disk gets updated with latest antivirus definitions.
