Internet users in India using Airtel Broadband and Reliance Broadband service must have recently noticed that both these ISP’s have blocked a majority of popular torrent sites in India since last night (May, 16th). Besides the torrent sites and illegal file sharing services, these leading internet service providers have also blocked access to sites such as xmarks.com, pastebin.com which is a sort of surprise as these services don’t serve any copyrighted or infringing content. According to Medianama, the reason behind this severe block is a ‘court ban’, following a John Doe order taken by Copyright Labs, Chennai, to prevent piracy of Tamil Films – Dhammu (Tamil) and 3 (Telugu).

Upon visiting any of these below listed websites on Airtel or Reliance Internet, you will see the following message “Access to this site has been blocked as per Court Orders”. On the contrary, BSNL and MTNL users are reporting that they’re able to access all the blocked sites easily. We’re not sure but this ban seems region specific as some users are able to access the banned sites in India on the above mentioned private ISP’s.

It’s certain that hundreds of thousands of people all over India are trying to open these torrent sites and other sites, which is impossible. However, there are hacks to access such restricted sites using a proxy or VPN, though that’s not suitable for everyone. By implementing https (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) in place of the usual http, you can access most of the popular torrent sites like thepiratebay, isohunt, torrentz, kickasstorrrent and clean site like Xmarks. WordPress Backup to Dropbox is a free plugin for WordPress that automatically uploads a backup of your entire website, including all files and its database, to Dropbox. With a minimalist and simple interface, it makes it easier for you to setup a recurring backup in a few clicks. It lets you initiate a backup process manually and also offers the functionality to schedule backup as desired so as to perform backups on regular basis. You can choose the date, time and frequency for the backup to dropbox. One can also choose what files and folders are to be included in the full backup. There’s a nifty option to select the files and directories that you wish to exclude from your backup.

In simple words, it can backup the root directory of your site (public_html) to a set location on your Dropbox account. You shouldn’t be concerned about the security as the plugin uses OAuth to keep your Dropbox account details safe. No credentials are stored for the plugin to gain access.

How to Backup WordPress Blog to Dropbox –

1. You must have a Dropbox account. It is Free and provides 2GB of free storage.

2. Open your WordPress dashboard, install the plugin ‘WordPress Backup to Dropbox’.

3. After activating the plugin, open its Settings from the Backup option in menu.

4. You now need to Authorize the plugin to connect it with your Dropbox account. Then grant access by clicking the ‘Allow’ button.

5. Now move back to WordPress Dash, go to plugin settings and specify the backup schedule. Tick mark any files or folders that you don’t want to be included.

The backup would be automatically performed at the specific time interval to Dropbox. Voila! All your site’s media and database will now be accessible from anywhere.

Google just announced that they are set to bring +1 on the Google Display Network, starting in October. If you’re a webmaster or blogger using Adsense, then the +1 button will begin to appear on display ads on your site. By clicking the +1 button, people will now be able to recommend specific ads and make them more likely to appear to their social connections. Certainly, this will result in a higher CTR and increase in revenue.

+1’s will be one additional signal that help determine an ad’s relevance. All eligible ads will continue to compete in the ad auction, and we’ll continue to show the ones that will generate the most revenue for you. +1 button clicks are not counted as clicks on ads. Although you won’t receive any revenue for +1 button clicks, +1’s will help AdSense to deliver more useful ads to your users, which we think will result in higher returns over time.

The +1 button will begin to appear on AdSense for content and AdSense for mobile content display ad formats – image, animated gif, and Flash ads. On mobile, the +1 button will replace the existing ‘g’ logo and recommendations will appear for several seconds, then fade out.

However, if you feel that the +1 button and social annotations are messing up the integrated Adsense unit or spoiling the look of ad units, then you can easily opt out.

To disable or remove +1 features and social annotations on display ads on your site:

1. Sign in to your AdSense account. (Switch to the New Adsense Interface)

2. Visit the Allow & block ads tab.

3. In the left panel, click Advanced settings.

4. Select either Content or Mobile Content from the Product drop-down menu.

5. Click the block button in the Social Ads Preference section.

As a publisher, if you choose to opt out, no +1 buttons or annotations will be shown on ads, and the Google Display Network will not use +1’s from your page visitors’ social connections to include additional ads in the auction.

Currently, Google has launched this big algorithmic change in the U.S. only and plans to roll it out universally over time. To determine if recent Google algorithm has affected your website SE traffic, check it easily by analysing your site’s organic traffic in past few days using Google Analytics:

Just visit Google Analytics > Traffic sources > Search Engines and choose ‘Google’ (organic) as the traffic source. Now examine your site’s organic traffic by seeing its growth or fall after Feb 24. Fortunately, this update hasn’t impacted our organic traffic.
