(MTNL), Mumbai has just introduced 4 new Broadband plans whose speed differs in Day and Night. All these plans are Unlimited, very much affordable and offers high Internet speed at Night. These plans are best for speedy browsing during the day at speed of 320 Kbps, 512 Kbps and 1 Mbps, you can schedule your heavy downloads for night time where stuff can be downloaded fast at high speed ranging from 1 Mbps to 2 Mbps, during the Night period (10 PM to 8 AM).

These new plans by MTNL Mumbai provide Unlimited amount of Monthly Data Transfer and there is NO FUP applicable on any of these plans. There is a Bonus pack too, users get upto 2 Mbps of speed on Sundays for the entire day. The Unlimited 888 and Unlimited 1333 plans look pretty decent for users with high bandwidth consumption.

The tariff for unlimited 3G data plans are now reduced by more than Rs. 1000 which is really affordable and good plan for heavy usage. The unlimited 3G postpaid plan earlier priced at Rs. 2499 now costs Rs. 1359, while the unlimited 3G prepaid plan earlier priced at Rs. 2756 now costs Rs. 1499 only.

Also, BSNL is running a Promotional Scheme for 90 days (w.e.f. 22.09.2010) which provides a good discount on some low data usage plans as shown in the chart below:

There is NO Fair Usage Policy (FUP) on Bsnl Unlimited 3G plans unlike Airtel. Bsnl 3G service is said to provide an amazing data transfer speed of upto 5Mbps and more. You can buy a “3G Data card” from Bsnl or unlocked one from market to avail the blazing fast 3G internet speed on your desktop PC or on laptop.

Airtel Fair Usage policy

Below FUP is applicable for – Mumbai, Gujrat, Maharashtra & Goa.

  • 384 Kbps till 15 GB, 256 Kbps after 15 GB
  • 512 Kbps till 15 GB, 256 Kbps after 15 GB
  • 512 Kbps till 20 GB, 256 Kbps after 20 GB | Night (10 pm – 6am) - 1 Mbps
  • 1 Mbps till 25 GB, 512 Kbps after 25 GB
  • 2 Mbps till 30 GB, 1 Mbps after 30 GB

As shown above, when you cross the maximum bandwidth limit on your plan; your Internet speed will be reduced to half. The ‘FUP’ is only meant for UL Broadband plans having speed of more than 256 kbps.

Eg:  If you have an unlimited plan that is, say, 512kbps in speed,  after a certain cap they will halve your speed to 256kbps for the rest of the month, while charging you the same amount that they have been charging you till now for 512kbps for the whole month!!!  Essentially they are giving you less (up to 45% less) service but for the same price!!!  And the cap can be reached in as quick as 5-6 days if you are a heavy user.

If you are against this "Fair Usage Policy" introduced by Airtel then you can join the Airtel Broadband “Fair Usage Policy” Protest Petition. This petition is being managed by the users of the India Broadband Forum which they will be sending to Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman & Managing Director, Bharti Airtel Ltd. after obtaining a significant number of signatures. 

>> Please do read the petition as well as the other information that is on their site, make up your own mind, and sign it if you agree with it. This can make Airtel think more to this problem.
