A day back, we shared about a service ‘gplus.to’ that lets you Shorten your Google+ profile link, thus to make it look cool and easier to share. Google+ hasn’t got the vanity URL option until now, so you might want to make your profile link short using some other unofficial services. Another new service has just been introduced called “plus.ly”.

Plus.ly is also a similar Google+ URL shortener service with a cool Google+ like interface. But unlike gplus.to, it allows you to use numbers and –, _, . in the opted username. So, plus.ly makes it possible to set a short URL like mayur.agarwal.

Google URL Shortener (goo.gl), which previously can be used only via Google toolbar and other Google products has now got its own website (http://goo.gl/) using which you can easily shorten any long webpage links and keep a track of links and their analytics.

Though, there are ample of URL shortening services being born daily, but Google aims to be the stablest, most secure, and fastest URL shortener on the web.

goo.gl also shows a list of URLs you’ve shortened in the past. You can find public, real-time analytics data, complete with traffic over time, top referrers, and visitor profiles of any shortened URL by clicking the ‘Details’ link. A QR Code can also be generated easily by just adding .qr at the end of shortened URL. eg: http://goo.gl/1b8C.qr

YouTube has introduced a new and quick feature which allows users to easily share Youtube videos link as a Short URL and in High definition (HD) formats like 720p & 1080p. You can also directly share Youtube videos on popular social networks like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Blogger, StumbleUpon and via Email too.

To shorten YouTube video link and share them in HD, just open the preferred youtube video. Now click the “Share” button located just below the video. Tick the ‘Short URL’ checkbox to shorten link and ‘HD URL’ to get the HD format link. Select both if you want Youtube video in short URL + HD format.

KnowURL is a useful online service which allow users to find, retrieve or unshorten the original URL hidden behind the Shortened URL. It supports almost all small big URL shortening sites like bit.ly, tr.im, tinyurl and many more.

This can come handy when you’re unsure about the original link and want to confirm if it’s safe before opening it. The service also lets you scan the link for viruses.

Tip – If you want to expand and see the actual link hidden behind any url, shortened using Bit.ly service, then just add + sign at end of shorten link to see detailed stats.

Firefox users use UntinyFox add-on to automatically see original link behind short URL’s.

Previously, I used TwitterFeed to publish WebTrickz RSS feed to my twitter account automatically. But now you don’t need to use any third party service for this task as Google Feedburner has added the option to tweet out your RSS feeds.

To use this service, simply log in to your Feedburner account. Choose the feed, open Publicize tab > Socialize and add your twitter account to it. Set your preferred options and Activate the service from bottom of that page.

The web link will be shortened using Google URL Shortener, goo.gl

Bit.ly is the largest URL Shortening service which is used by Twitter as default. Bit.ly has now added support for uploading data like Images, videos and PDF documents.

The files types supported are jpg, png, gif, bmp, tiff (images) swf, flv, mp4, mov, avi (videos) and PDF files. To upload file, just open bit.ly and click on ‘Link to a File’.

The best part is that Bit.ly allows you to track your links and share them easily without the need to Sign Up.

As you may know, the trend of URL Shortening services started with Twitter. These services are mostly used by twitter to embed website link into its tweets which are limited to 140 characters.

I’ve found a statistical graph that shows, which URL shortening services are how much popular on Twitter. The stats are based on data collected during a 24 hour period.

As seen above, bit.ly is the winner with a major share of 53.75%. That’s because bit.ly is the default service used by twitter to shorten its links. [via]Related Posts:
