VideoLAN has finally released the much awaited 2.0 version of “VLC Media Player”, the best and most popular media player for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player that plays most multimedia files including DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols. VLC 2.0.0 “Twoflower” is a major release, presented after 485 million downloads of VLC 1.1.x versions. It efficiently plays most codecs (MPEG-2, H.264, DivX, MPEG-4, WebM, WMV player) without requiring any codec packs.

What’s New in VLC 2.0:

Dirpy is back in action – Dirpy, the popular and amazing online media conversion service was discontinued due to lack of resources. Seems Dirpy team wasn’t happy about it and thus decided to kick off once again after resting for a while! Few months back, Google rolled out the Cosmic Panda experimental design for YouTube that offers a different look and a new experience for Videos, Playlists, and Channels but hasn’t been launched publicly yet. It now appears that YouTube is testing a fresh new design for their homepage which isn’t introduced for official preview yet but is being rolled out randomly for some YouTube users. Moritz Tolxdorff, a smart folk on Google+ has figured out a way to get the new design by tricking a related cookie.

You can easily enable the New YouTube homepage on Google Chrome and Firefox browser. This wont affect the design of individual videos webpage. To do so,

1. Open www.youtube.com

2. Press Ctrl + Shift and J in Chrome to open the Developer Tools.

Press Ctrl+Shift+K in Firefox

3. In Chrome, click on the "Console" Tab, paste the below code and hit enter.

In Firefox, just paste the above code (next to grey arrow) and hit enter.

4. Reload YouTube and enjoy the new layout.

What’s New?

1. An all new beautifully designed homepage.

2. Subscribed and Suggested channels are listed in a sidebar on left. Added option to check the Popular and Trending videos from YouTube.

3. The mid-panel shows the lists of most recent videos from your Subscriptions, thus making it easier to keep up with the latest activity.

4. Quickly subscribe to favorite channels by sorting them on basis of categories.

5. Recommended videos are listed on the right sidebar of homepage.

This new YouTube design isn’t declared officially yet and might get changed in future.

One can easily view YouTube videos in fullscreen with just a click of the button. But the full screen option offered by Youtube occupies the entire desktop screen which you might not want every time. Here is an easy way to ‘Set YouTube videos to Play in full screen mode by default’ and they will expand to entire window of your browser only.

We often skip a certain segment while watching videos to view only the necessary clip. Likewise, when sharing YouTube video links with your friends, you might want to set YouTube video to start/play from a specified time interval so that the viewer only sees the desired portion and don’t need to buffer the unneeded initial part of the video.

Luckily, YouTube has now made it very easy to do this by adding an extra option to the right-click context menu of its videos. To set a specific start time for YouTube videos, just pause the video at a desired time, right-click on the video and select the ‘Copy video URL at current time’ option. Now use or share this video URL to let the video automatically play from the defined starting time.

Alternate way – You can manually add the string #t=27s (replace 27s with the required starting time like 40s or 1.04m) to the end of any Youtube video URL.

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Kyb7U_djUk#t=27s

Hope they also implement this feature when embedding YouTube videos. :)

Update – Our friend Amit Banerjee has shared an easy way which allows you to set a specified start/play time when embedding Youtube videos on a site or blog.

Embed Youtube video to start at a specific time – Get the HTML code of video from Youtube and paste it in the HTML section or Source (in Windows Live Writer). Now add the parameter &start=27 right after the video ID in the YouTube video embed code.

“Remember to replace 27 with the desired starting time and paste the same parameter twice, right after 2 video IDs present in the video embed code.”
