Gionee has introduced a new smartphone “M5 Plus” to its best-selling Marathon series, famous for phones with large capacity batteries. The Marathon M5 Plus is the successor to the Gionee M5 and M5 Lite, launched a while ago in India. The M5 Plus is the first phone from Marathon series to feature a fingerprint sensor and it’s Gionee first phone sporting the new smiling logo and branding ‘Make Smiles‘. The device was launched in China in December last year and is now available in India at a price tag of Rs. 26,999. The M5 Plus sports a full-metal body design, packing a big size display and battery in an ultra-slim profile. Let’s take a look at the offerings of the M5+:
The Gionee M5 Plus features a 6-inch Full HD AMOLED display @368ppi and is backed by a massive 5020mAh battery. It sports a fingerprint sensor that’s integrated with the physical home button. On the front is a 2.5D glass panel with curved edges and thin bezels for improved user experience. The M5 Plus is powered by an Octa-core Mediatek MT6753 processor and runs on Amigo 3.1 UI, based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. Under the hood, there is 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage that can be further expanded up to 128GB via microSD card. Fortunately, it doesn’t come with a Hybrid SIM slot rather it has separate slots for Dual-SIM cards and SD card, so you can use secondary SIM as well while using external storage.
Coming to the camera, there is a 13MP primary camera with dual-LED flash and a 5MP camera on the front. Connectivity options include Dual-SIM, 4G LTE with VoLTE, CDMA support, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP, GPS with A-GPS, USB OTG, and USB Type-C port. Amigo UI offers added features such as Theme Park, Auto Call Record, Mobile Security, Smart Gestures (Smart Dial, Smart Answer, Double Click To Wake), Chameleon, Ami Locker, Child Mode, Super screenshots, Fake Call, etc.
The phone is equipped with dual charging chips that allow fast charging of the non-removable 5020mAh battery. Additionally, there are battery saving modes namely: Eco Mode, Power Saving Mode, Extreme Mode to further extend the battery life. Gionee claims that the M5+ can deliver a talk time of up to 21 hours and a standby time of up to 619 hours, hence can last an entire day easily.
Comparing against the entire Marathon series, M5 Plus packs the biggest display and slimmest form-factor with 8.4mm of thickness and it’s 210g in weight despite packing a huge battery. Comes in Champagne Gold and Polar Gold.
The M5 Plus is now available across retail outlets in India, as well as online exclusively through Flipkart for 26,999 INR. We’re currently using this phone and will be coming up soon with its detailed review. Stay tuned!
