Twitter has quietly added a new option in settings that lets you receive direct messages (DM’s) from anyone who follows you, without requiring you to follow them back. Generally, you had to follow someone before they have the ability to direct message you. If you enable this option, any Twitter user who follows you will be able to send you a DM, regardless of whether you follow them or not.
This new option to receive DM’s from your followers would be certainly beneficial for brands, journalists, and offering customer service but on the contrary it could be a rejoice for spammers and bots too, who can easily freak users with spam messages. This new feature is currently being rolled out and is turned off by default. Those interested in enabling it, can visit their twitter account settings and check the desired option.
