Animated GIF Viewer for Windows 7 and Vista

Mayur Agarwal by Mayur Agarwal

in Windows 7

Unlike Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows Vista don’t support viewing of animated gif files. Though, you can use the default Windows Photo Viewer to open gifs but it only shows a still image of a gif considering it is an animated one. One can also set Internet Explorer as the default viewer for viewing animated gifs but many people dislike using it because it takes a long to open and you can’t view multiple gif images simultaneously, that are located in the same folder.

Luckily, a Seven Forums member ‘corgano’ has created a small but nifty program that allows you to quickly view Non-animated and Animated GIF files in Windows 7 and Vista. Gifview has a very simple interface and doesn’t require any installation. It also lets you view multiple gifs in a row, which means you can simply move between files using the Previous and Next buttons or just use the back and forward keys to switch between gif files. The app has one special feature which is the ability to pause an animated gif so that you can capture a specific frame.

GIF Viewer

To use GIF Animation, just right-click any gif file and open Properties. Under properties, click Change. In the ‘Open with’ window, browse for the gifview.exe directory and select it as the default program to open with. Now click OK and again OK.

Download GIF View

Thanks, Bogz for the tip.

Yeah, no wonder. You should open the .gif file with that programme, not the programme itself.

    Thank you so much!!
Some picture doesn’t fit (I tend to draw pretty big) so you can’t see the top and there’s no scroll bar but oh well.

My god, finally a animated .gif viewer for Windows 7 that avoids having to open a webbrowser. Works perfectly on 64-bit version. Thanks so much!!

I had this program before, and I recently had to recover my laptop to factory condition and I have to re-download the program, but it seems that the link is broken, removed actually, so could you perhaps re-post a link to the download?

Thanks for reuploading this nice piece of software.
Opening each file in the browser made me sick.

I have used it for ages, however, I reformatted my laptop and it will only work from the desktop and not hidden in my documents like it used to, any ideas?

This doesn’t open all the way & cuts off the whole picture view until you mazimize the image, as well as shows files leaking out behind the first photo, which looks bad. How to make the GIF file open FULL sized every time without extra clicks, & not have photos behind the viewed one sticking out?

Interesting problem, Ruth, are you new to using computers?

No, I’m not new to computers. I’m on Win7 with all kinds of browsing nightmares no matter what browser I use. I just used the Internet Explorer way to open what I needed at the moment that worked, but as others say, that way opens only one GIF & not a way to view many in a row in your folder. I might try to figure this out at another time now when I use GIF’s more. But thank you for your response.

Excellent piece of nifty software! Thank you very much for uploading this.

It was a real nightmare using Chrome or other software for opening some Pikachu GIFs I had. Clunky and slow, and although at least it doesn\’t look bad in Internet Explorer I\’ve disabled IE and WMP since they put unnecessary pretty icons in my taskbar (and if you unpin them, they\’re in the Start Menu anyway) and don\’t contribute to my browsing or media.

This was a lifesaver. Thanks again!
