Microsoft Family Safety is a useful feature designed to help parents monitor and manage their child’s device usage. It lets you set screen time limits, block certain apps or websites, and track online activity across devices.
While it’s helpful for families, it can be annoying if you’re not actually part of a family group or if the feature was enabled by mistake. You might see constant pop-ups like “Ask a parent to use this app” or “Request more screen time,” especially when trying to use browsers like Google Chrome instead of Microsoft Edge.
If you don’t want to deal with these restrictions, you can manually turn off Microsoft Family Safety features on your Windows PC. This quick guide shows a simple way to stop or remove Family Safety controls from a Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC, if you have admin access.
How to Turn Off or Disable Microsoft Family Safety Mode in Windows
If you don’t want to manage family safety settings or you’re getting constant permission pop-ups, you can stop Family Safety locally by disabling its background service. This can be done through the Windows Services Manager.
Note: You need to be signed in as an administrator to enable or disable Windows services.
Follow these steps to stop or completely disable Microsoft Family Safety (Parental Controls) service in Windows 11 or Windows 10:
- Open the Start menu and search for services.
- Right-click the Services app and select “Run as administrator“.

- Scroll through the list and look for Parental Controls.
- To temporarily stop parental controls for child accounts, right-click the “Parental Controls” service and select “Stop“.

- To stop parental controls from starting automatically, right-click Parental Controls and choose Properties.
- In the Properties window, click the dropdown menu next to Startup type and select “Disabled“.

- Click Apply, then OK, and restart your PC to save the changes.
Once disabled, Windows will no longer enforce Microsoft Family Safety restrictions on that device, and those annoying “send parent request” or “restricted access” pop-ups should disappear.
Important Notes
- Disabling this service only affects the current device. If your Microsoft account is still part of a Family group online, Family Safety settings might reapply when you sign in on another device.
- If your account is under a child profile, the restrictions may still return unless the organizer removes you from the Family group at account.microsoft.com/family.
- Use this method only on your own computer, as bypassing parental controls on someone else’s account without permission isn’t recommended.
Wrapping Up
Microsoft Family Safety is great for parents, but it can get in the way if you’re an adult using a restricted account. Disabling the Parental Controls service through the Services app is a quick way to stop those pop-ups and use your preferred apps freely on Windows.
