By default, Microsoft Edge opens MSN with Bing search and news feed whenever you launch the browser or open a new tab. Even if you set Google as your startup page, new tabs will still show MSN, which can be frustrating if you prefer using Google Search.
Microsoft doesn’t offer a built-in setting to change the new tab page in Edge to Google or any other custom URL. However, with a simple workaround using an extension, you can set Google (or any website you like) as your new tab page.
How Can I Stop MSN from Opening on Edge?
Microsoft Edge forces its own new tab page experience, which includes MSN’s news feed, quick links, and Bing search bar. While you can disable the news feed or remove shortcuts, you can’t completely set a new tab page in Edge without using an extension.
Setting Google as your start page or home button only works when you first open Edge or click the Home icon. This means new tabs remain unchanged and default to MSN.
To make every new tab open Google, you’ll need to use a browser extension.
How to Change New Tab Page to Google in Edge
Looking to remove MSN from Edge? You can replace MSN on the new tab page with Google Search using the New Google Tab extension.
To set Google as your default new tab page in Edge (Windows and Mac):
- Open Microsoft Edge on your computer.
- Go to the New Google Tab extension page.
- Click Get, then click Add Extension to install the add-on.

- Note: Edge turns off the extension by default. To enable it, visit
edge://extensionsand toggle on the switch next to New Google Tab.
- Open a new tab, and you’ll now see Google Search instead of MSN.
- If you see the below prompt, click Keep Changes to prevent Edge from restoring your previous settings.

Open a new tab, and Edge will open up Google just like Chrome.
How to Set a Custom New Tab Page in Edge
If you want a different website, such as ChatGPT, YouTube, or Gmail to open on every new tab, you can use the Custom New Tab extension instead.
To set the default page when opening a new tab in Edge:
- Install Custom New Tab from the Edge Add-ons store.
- Click Get > Add Extension to install the extension.

- Select Turn on when a prompt appears at the top-right or directly visit
edge://extensionsto open the Extensions page.
- Turn on the toggle button next to Custom New Tab to enable the add-on.
- Click on Details to open the extension’s settings.

- Go to Extension options at the bottom.

- Enter your desired URL (for example,
https://chatgpt.com) and click Save.
That’s it. Now your set URL will open up whenever you open a new tab or window.
Tip: If it doesn’t work immediately, close and reopen Edge for changes to take effect.
How to Change Your Homepage in Edge to Google
While changing the homepage won’t affect the new tab page, it’s useful if you want Google to load when you launch Edge.
To set Google as your homepage in Microsoft Edge:
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and select Settings.

- In the left sidebar, go to Start, home, and new tab page.
- Under On start-up, select Open custom sites and click the Add site button.

- Enter
https://www.google.comin the URL field and click Add.
- Optional: To enable the Home button in the toolbar, turn on the toggle for Show home button on the toolbar and set it to Google.

Microsoft Edge doesn’t natively let you change the new tab page from MSN to Google, but using the right extensions can solve the problem instantly.
If you also change your homepage to Google Search, you’ll have Google ready whether you’re launching Edge, clicking the Home button, or opening a new tab.
