The iPhone 17 series and iPhone Air use Face ID and have no Home button, so the way you turn them off differs from older iPhone models.
On these models, you need to press the Side button and a Volume button together to bring up the power-off screen.
This guide explains how to turn off, restart, and force restart the iPhone 17 series, with the same steps also applying to iPhone Air.
How to Power Off iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max
The quickest way to power off your iPhone 17 is to use the Side and Volume buttons.
- Press and hold the Side button and either the Volume Up or Volume Down button at the same time.

- When the power-off screen appears, drag the Power Off slider to the right.

- Wait for the screen to go black. Your iPhone is now turned off.
To turn your iPhone back on, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Turn Off iPhone 17 Without Buttons
If you don’t want to use the physical buttons, you can shut down your iPhone from Settings.
- Open Settings and go to General.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Shut Down.

- Drag the slide to power off slider to the right.

Turn Off iPhone 17 from Control Center
You can also power off your iPhone directly from Control Center.
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center.
- Touch and hold the Power button in the top-right corner.

- Drag the Power Off slider to shut down your iPhone.
How to Restart iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max
A normal restart requires you to turn off the iPhone and then turn it back on.
First, use any of the methods above to switch off your iPhone. Once the screen is completely black, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Your iPhone will then start normally.
Restart iPhone 17 Without Using the Buttons
You can also restart your iPhone 17 using AssistiveTouch.
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch.
- Turn on AssistiveTouch.

- Tap the floating AssistiveTouch button.

- Go to Device > More.

- Tap Restart and confirm.

How to Force Restart iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max
If your iPhone is frozen, unresponsive, or the screen isn’t responding, you can force restart it. A force restart does not erase your data.
To force restart an iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, or iPhone 17 Pro Max:
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears, then release it.
Your iPhone will restart automatically.
Note: The Apple logo may take more than 10 seconds to appear, so keep holding the Side button until you see it.

Thank you. As a long-time Android user who’s just switched, I appreciate the help with my new Iphone 17 pro.
