Facebook Messenger for iPhone and Android has got a new update that brings a host of new features. These include the Star Wars and Selena: The Series chat theme, new camera stickers, and the ability to reply to a specific message with a photo or video. There is also a new tap-to-record feature that allows users to easily record and send voice messages without holding down the record button.
Additionally, users can now archive inactive chats with a simple swipe gesture. Facebook has also made it easier to find your archived messages by adding a new “Archived Chats” folder as a dedicated menu in Messenger 2021.
With this update, you no longer need to manually search for archived chats. You can access the full list of archived conversations in one place, which is useful if you don’t remember the person’s name or the group conversation you archived.
Moreover, it is now possible to unarchive chats on Messenger without sending a message. This will let you move archived chats back to your inbox without bothering the recipient.
How to Delete Archived Chats in Messenger
If you have a lot of archived threads that are redundant and not needed anymore, you can permanently delete them from your Messenger account so that they cannot be retrieved later on.
Here’s how you can delete archived messages in Messenger on iPhone and Android:
- Open the Messenger app and tap the Menu button at the top left.
- Select the “Archive” option.
- To delete an archived chat, tap and hold (long-press) the particular chat and select “Delete“.
- Tap on Delete again to delete the archived conversation forever.
There is also an alternate way for iPhone or iPad users. Just swipe left on the archived message, tap “More,” and then tap the Delete option.

The only downside is that you still cannot delete all or multiple archived messages at once.
On Computer
You can also delete archived chats on your PC or Mac through messenger.com. To do so:
- Visit messenger.com in a browser on your computer and log in to your account.
- In the sidebar on the left, click the “Archive” option.
- Hover your mouse cursor over a particular chat and click the 3-dot icon.
- Select “Delete Chat” from the list.
- Click on Delete Chat again to confirm your choice.

How to Unarchive Messages on the Messenger App
The updated Messenger offers the ability to unarchive messages without messaging. Earlier, users had to send a message or reply, to unarchive an archived chat.
It’s worth noting that an archived chat will be automatically unarchived when you receive a new message in that specific chat.
Here’s how you can unarchive a conversation in Facebook Messenger:
On iPhone – Tap your Menu icon at the top left and go to ‘Archive’. Swipe left on a chat you want to move back to your inbox and tap the “Unarchive” icon. You can also swipe all the way to the left to unarchive a chat in a single gesture.

Another way is to long-press on a specific chat and tap the “Unarchive” option.
On Android – Open the Archived chats and long-press the chat conversation you want to unarchive. Tap “Unarchive” from the list.

Can’t removed people that got in my Facebook messager hosts
The crazy and just plain old unbelievable thing is that we cannot delete all of them at once, has to be done one at a time and it takes 3 clicks to do each one, so way to go FB! How about a “delete all” option!?!?
Utter nonsense!!
I agree! It’s crazy you can’t do a “select all” in archived messages and do a dump. It’s gonna take me hours to delete archived messages.
If I get some handy resolve to this issue, I’ll post or reply here!!
Glad in not the only one in this situation ??
Why are they archived in the first place.I already deleted them and didnt even know there was an archive file until I found it accidentally. If I wanted to keep them I wouldnt have deleted them in the first place. Now ive got dozens to ge t rid of one at a time
This is stupid. I have chats from 2009! I deleted all of them on the pc, but on the mobile phone there still there. Next time I went on the pc, all the chats that I deleted are still there. You cannot permanently delete all of them at once.
So when are they going to come up with a way to delete everything in the archived folder. I have hundreds and would like them ALL GONE. it’s ridiculous to have to delete them One at a time AND have to hit delete two of three times to confirm you want them Gone?
